Howdy y'all. I, Pun Intended, will be your guest writer today (and hopefully on other days as well!). So, as most of you probably know by now, Square Enix is releasing a remastered version of Final Fantasy X and X-2. But wait! There's more!

| Pun Intended in the Hiz-House! |
While, I won't drone on with all the details of the Final Fantasy X | X-2 remastering (there's plenty of sites for that anyway), I do want to mention that the latest edition will include the International versions that North America never received for either of the games. That means, more bosses and more missions!
Okay, serious face now.
As exciting as this whole kaboodle is, I do regret to inform you that there has been some mention that even though Final Fantasy X will have all the international content included, X-2 may not. I won't regurgitate everything that's in the article I linked you to, but I think it'd be in rather poor judgement if Enix decided to cut out the Last Missions all together. It's a huge deal for fans that we get all the content that North America didn't get.
To exclude something completely, even if it doesn't deal much with the plot, isn't only unfortunate but a bad decision. If they decide to not add it into the game by whenever it releases, I really hope they at least go with it as a DLC. I could understand them cutting it out for the actual release to save on time to make sure it comes out for 2013. If they're short on time, a DLC would make the most sense (though I'll still hold out for it coming with everything!).
However, I didn't come here today to only talk about the release of this game. As with any remake Enix puts out (or even any original game they put out for Final Fantasy), there will always, and I do mean always, be some people who bitch and whine about how "Square needs to remake FFVII!" Wah. Wah. Wah. Shut up, you wankers. I'm really tired of hearing about it.

There are other games besides FFVII!
|
Yet, does this mean people can't yearn for a FFVII remake? No! Of course not! If one ever was released, I'd instabuy that shit. I'm a big fan of FFX and FFVII (though X does happen to be my favourite). What I mean is that, people can want a remake of [insert game here], but they should not feel entitled to one. Entitlement is the entire issue. Take out the self-absorbed attitude and we're a-okay!
I'm sure there are many who would disagree, but there actually was some thought behind the developers deciding on FFX. It was a really well-loved game and when Enix had met with many of the voice actors who had worked on Final Fantasy X (who are currently working on Type-0), they decided they should do something with X again (Yay Nomura for taking the initiative!). It makes me really excited that they decided to do this since it means everyone gets all the content they missed out on the first time around! How can anyone argue with that (trick question: you can't!)?
The original plan was to release it for FFX's Ten Year Anniversary. Even though its release date has far passed the anniversary for X, this year is actually X-2's Ten Year! Everything works out pretty nicely on the anniversary front.
Another big reason that could have contributed to Final Fantasy X over VII was the fact that the current CEO (the only who actually recently stepped down) had said that he did not want to have a Final Fantasy VII remake until they had created a game in terms of quality that surpassed VII. With that in mind, of course they went for X over VII. The chances for them to redo it, was virtually impossible with Yoichi Wada as CEO!
Some other things to consider are just how much freaking work it would take to redo VII compared to X. Final Fantasy X was already rather decent on the graphics front. FFVII....well as groundbreaking as it was for its time for console gaming, it leaves much to be desired (especially in comparison to Crisis Core or Advent Children). Stuff would have to be completely reworked from the ground up, and that doesn't even include the need for voice acting. I can't imagine them doing a remake without adding the voice acting in which would add a very interesting element to the game, considering it didn't have it before.
Then, there's even the worry of trying to improve upon (subjective) perfection. People LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Final Fantasy VII. Full out love the shit out of it. For many, it was their first Final Fantasy. Seeing it in completely new graphics with voice acting could actually be quite a shock. If the radical fans are so devoted for a remake, who is to say that once they have it, they won't complain it wasn't done right and nitpick it to death? For a company, that can be a really scary thought. I know I'd be freaked out by alienating one of my biggest fanbases.
On the other hand, those could argue that they're already alienating them by not giving them the remake in the first place. I highly disagree: FFVII already has Crisis Core, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus. Yet they're still screaming for more, more, more? Again, I say they're entitled assholes.
FFX only got X-2 (which while the battle system was uh-may-zing, the story does leave some to be desired.. and I say this as a fan of the game). FFVII may get its day some day for updated everything ever, which may be ever more likely with the rise of a new CEO, but right now, let's let Final Fantasy X have its place in the spotlight.

P.S: The bottom this page may say this post is written by Scott Rosenberg, it's not. It's really is Pun Intended. Bloody blogger migration tool. I bite my thumb at thee!

The few FF games I played, I must say my favorite is FFX an X-2.
ReplyDeleteOh and the gameboy advance called tactics advance, annd Crystal Chronicles. I enjoy the "black sheeps" of games. I have made many fans of the FF series enraged over my favorite titles. Glad this is getting a remake.
is this coming out just for sony platforms or microsoft too?
Just for the PS3 and the Vita. : 3
ReplyDeleteThe PS3 has X and X-2 bundled into one disc, while the Vita has it on separate cartridges because of storage issues
I'm definitely all up for the X and X-2 remaster. X was pretty damn impressive for its time. I agree with the less-than-stellar X-2 story, but hey, it's not bad. For godsakes, I cosplayed as Yuna.
ReplyDeleteIf they put a little elbow grease into X-2's storyline, like maybe add some extended story or whatnot, I'd be totally sold.
It'd be really awesome if they did edit even just a bit of the story, but sadly that's highly unlikely. D: The only way that'd happen if they pushed the deadline farther which would hurt Enix faaaar more than it'd help I think. : /
ReplyDeleteI think they should have just put more time in general into X-2 in the beginning when it was first made. Though its battle system is still the best I've ever played in an FF. (not counting XIII or XIII-2 because I haven't gotten around to playing them yet)
I'm actually pretty damn excited for kingdom hearts 1.5
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you!!! FF VII would take waaaaay to much work to re-do. I love FF VII because its so old school and blocky, and if it would change it would just be reeeeeally fucking weird. FF VII with voice acting would not feel right at all. They do have voice actors from Advent Children that are what we think they should sound like, but hearing those voices in the actual game would just be weird in my opinion. Also, IT WOULD BE REALLY HARD TO REMAKE EVERYTHING!!! Unlike FF X which is at least close to what graphics are for today, FF VII is nowhere near that. They would literally have to go through every level, cutscene, boss, monsters, programming, character designs, music, sounds, menus, controls possibly, and a lot of other stuff. They would have to go through every level and aspect of the game and break it down to build it all back up again. AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT! As much as I love FF VII I am happy with what they have gave us so far. They really have been very generous: Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Advent Children Complete, and the Denzel anime series. They have done as much as they could for us without having to go back and do this insane task of remastering the game. Maybe we should just be happy with what they have given us? Final Fantasy 10 has not received this much attention, and being another of my favorite in the series I think it is time that they get a lot more recognition and a beautiful remaster of the game sounds perfect <3 ALSO, I think they should worry more about Final Fantasy 13 Versus, I mean COME ON this was supposed to happen FIVE years ago! Sorry this was kind of ranty, but thats my 2 cents :3 Great post by the way! Dem gifs make me so happy :3
ReplyDeleteWhoa there's an anime series? o.o That much I wasn't aware of!
ReplyDeleteIf they ever do decide to do a remake of VII, they should do it once Lightning Returns and Versus is done at /minimum/. I would also love for them to finally get started on Kingdom Hearts III. >.> It'll prolly be once Kingdom Hearts II is 10 years old, that they'll announce they're working on it. XD Oh Enix. You so silleh.
Things will really be interesting once the new CEO takes over though, that's for certain. I wonder what changes he has in store. :3
Also, paragraphs my friend. Paragraphs. :P
I'm just excited to see Lulu's and Rikku's rack in HD glory. And great gif choices! I never tire of seeing Ru smack Tyra's lame ass.
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I used to be one of those "OMG I LOOOOOVE FFVII MAKE A REMAKE RIGHT THE FUCK NOW" but as I grew up (heh) I definitely relaxed on the whole issue. I'm super excited for the X/X-2 remaster and even if Enix decides to remaster/make everything BUT VII (even XII! Remember that one?! Yeah me neither), I'll probably be ok with that as well. Though I think they may be trying to gauge consumer interest maybe? If this remaster sells well, maybe they'll get on the ball for the VII remake a bit faster. IDK. I just want boobs.
Maybe I'll check that series out sometime. Sounds cool.
ReplyDeleteblock boobs ftw!
ReplyDeleteChoosing to re-release X and X-2 was definitely a smart choice by Enix. It was a good place to start on remakes since it won't be all that different from the original, but they'll see how well remakes/re-releases will sell. Hopefully it does well and maybe we can finally see a VII remake sometime in the future. As great as the original game is, it'd be amazing to see it with beautiful graphics and voice acting. Crisis Core showed how great a remake could potentially be, and that was with PSP graphics.
ReplyDeleteIt's stupid they didn't bundle them for vita. It's not like there is a max disk size
ReplyDeleteI'm so hyped for this release. FFX was arguably my favorite game on the PS2. I played X-2, but don't remember much about so this'll give me a chance to replay it in it's HD goodness. If Square utilizes the cross save feature I would totally contemplate purchasing a Vita.
ReplyDeleteI've only played 3 Final Fantasy titles up to this point, and they are X, X-2 & XIII. Seeing that I have never once played VII, I would love it if Square were release a remastered version of that game, so I could finally play it.
I'm looking forward to it myself
ReplyDeleteYeah, a big reason why a VII remake would be great is for the people who've never had a chance to play it, because getting a hold of a used copy is ridiculously expensive. o.o
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Playstation/dp/B00000JRSB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365333764&sr=8-1&keywords=final+fantasy+vii
and the greatest hits version is the same price! It's insane. I'm so damn thankful I got my copy when it was still $15 dollars at K-Mart...
If you really enjoyed X, I highly recommend IX. :3
IX is my second favourite only to X. Thankfully IX is reasonably priced! VII is the only FF game that I'm aware of where the price spiked like that (at least for a hard copy of it). It's just that damn popular. Though it seems to be available to play on PC if you're ever curious!

You had an interesting rant going on, until you managed to write "(though X does happen to be my favourite)". That's where all your credibility went in to the toilet. You are hating on FFVII fans only because YOUR favourite is getting a makeover. Haters will always be haters...
ReplyDeleteI believe she was hating on entitlement issues.
ReplyDeleteShe seems to be glad her favorite is being remade, but she hates the idea where people are like "UGH, ENIX HAS TO DO MY GAME" whine whine whine
I think your reading comprehension leaves a lot to be desired.
ReplyDeleteI will redirect you to the paragraph you are quoting me from that you clearly didn't read properly:
"Yet, does this mean people can’t yearn for a FFVII remake? No! Of course
not! If one ever was released, I’d instabuy that shit. I’m a big fan of

I never said a single bad thing about FFVII. I'd gladly take a VII remake, even if VII got remade over X instead. It's not a big deal. I just don't like entitlement issues. Same goes for Half Life 3 fanboys. Valve will put it out, when they put it out. As fans, we just have to wait.
Read before you put your foot in your mouth. I'm sure it's a lovely taste.
